Volunteer at the Farm

We need your help to build Good Hope Farm! Join us for one of our monthly workdays, or contact the farm manager if you think you can assist the farm in another way.

Purpose

Volunteers help with projects to help further the mission of Good Hope Farm.  The farm, operated by the Piedmont Conservation Council on land owned by the Town of Cary, seeks to create a financially sustainable model of leasing farmland to new farmers, connect new farmers with local market opportunities, serve as a demonstration site for environmentally responsible farming practices, and provide educational opportunities for the community regarding agriculture and nutrition.

Qualifications

A desire to safely assist with farm tasks is all that you need!  Farm or garden experience is helpful, but not required. All volunteers will receive a brief orientation before work begins. Volunteers must at least 12 years old and accompanied by an adult if under the age of 18.

Responsibilities and duties

Depending on which workday you attend, projects could include:

  • Site cleanup and maintenance
  • Installing infrastructure
  • Planting

Preparing for the workday

A completed volunteer waiver form is required to volunteer at Good Hope Farm.  You can print and bring a completed waiver with you on your first volunteer day, or fill it out at the farm. Volunteers under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian sign.

We will be working outside, so wear closed-toe, protective shoes and clothes that can get dirty.  Please bring work gloves if you have them.  We encourage you to wear a hat, sunscreen, and bug spray and bring a water bottle.  Water and snacks are provided. There is no cooler, so please plan accordingly if you need to keep a drink, snack, or medicine cold.

If inclement weather looks likely, volunteers will be notified by email of a cancellation no later than 7 a.m. on the morning of the volunteer event.  Volunteer activities will take place during light rain, but will be cancelled during heavy rain, heavy wind, snow, thunder, and/or lightning.
